INTRODUCTION
This is a book on steam locomotives of North American Railroads. Wood was used for fuel for a hot fire in a fire box, that would heat water in a boiler and turn it to steam. The steam would flow to special cylinders and push on drive rods that were connected to the wheels. This would move the locomotive down the track.
Later the railroads began using coal for fuel and still later some steam engines used oil.
For many years, the only type of locomotive found on the railroads was steam. Then later we had electric engines and finally beginning in the late 1920's, diesel engines. The diesel locomotive completely replaced the steam locomotive, and so today in 1977, we have only a few left in the United States and Canada. Most of these operate in excursion or tourist service, and not in freight train service.
The purpose of this book is to describe the different types of steam locomotives and what they were used for. Each type is identified by its wheel arrangement and name, if it had one, and the type of work it was built for.
The wheel arrangements are known as the "Whyte System." This system helped identify locomotives. For example, if a locomotive had 4 wheels at the front (this means two on each side), six large drive wheels and 2 wheels under the firebox, it was known as a 4-6-2 or Pacific type. If there were no wheels in front, four drive wheels and no wheels under the firebox, it was an 0-4-0 switcher. As you read the book, the pictures will help you to understand this system. We hope you enjoy this book on locomotives that we do not get to see everyday anymore.
