PREFACE
YEARBOOK OF RAILROAD INFORMATION
The 1959 YEARBOOK presents, as have earlier editions, a summary of railway operations for a number of previous years. In a few instances, figures for 1958 are not available because the Interstate Commerce Commission - the source unless otherwise indicated - had not completed its compilation at the time this edition went to press. It will be noted, too, that some of the 1957 figures are at slight variance with those shown in the previous YEARBOOK. These variations are the result of changes made from edition to edition as final ICC figures become available.
Yearly figures are given, in most cases, for the past 16 years for comparison purposes. Earlier five-year averages are also shown to indicate the trends from pre-depression years, through the depression, into the World War II period and the years immediately thereafter.
With but few exceptions, the YEARBOOK deals with Class I railroads, which account for nearly 99 per cent of the operating revenues of all line-haul railroads. Under ICC rules effective January 1, 1956, Class 1 railroads are those having annual operating revenues of $3 million or more; all others are included in Class II. Prior to 1956, the minimum for Class I was $1 million, while Class II covered the $100,000 to $1 million range and railroads with revenues of less than $100,000 were in Class IIL The 1956 change in classification had no significant effect on year to year comparability of statistics of Class I roads.
Where figures are shown for ALL railroads, they include those of Class II and (prior to 1956) Class III.
As heretofore, this edition gives a largely statistical picture of the railroad industry as a whole while providing many facts about Eastern railroads as a group. EASTERN FIGURES INCLUDE THOSE FOR RAILROADS IN THE POCAHONTAS REGION.
As defined by the ICC, the Eastern District comprises that portion of the United States bounded on the west by the northern and the western shore of Lake Michigan to Chicago, thence by a line to Peoria, thence to East St. Louis, thence down the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Ohio River, and on the south by the Ohio River from its mouth to Parkersburg, W. Va., thence by a line to the southwestern corner of Maryland, thence by the Potomac River to its mouth.
The Pocahontas Region comprises the section north of the southern boundary of Virginia, east of Kentucky and the Ohio River north to Parkersburg, W.Va., and south of a line from Parkersburg to the southwestern corner of Maryland and thence by the Potomac River to its mouth.
