The 1956 YEARBOOK presents, as have earlier editions, a summary of railway operations for a number of previous years. In a few instances, figures for 1955 are not available because the Interstate Commerce Commision the source unless otherwise indicated had not completed its compilation at the time this edition went to press. It will be noted, too, that some of the 1954 figures are at slight variance with those shown in the previous YEARBOOK. These variations are the result of changes made from edition to edition as final ICC figures become available
