For purposes of comparison, figures are given for a number of preceding years, with average annual figures for 5-year periods. These are 1926-30, a period of peacetime prosperity; 1931-35, depression years; 1936-40, the period preceding World War II; 1941-45, World War II; and 1946-50, post-war period.
