The 1978 YEARBOOK of RAILROAD FACTS presents a summary of railroad operations in 1977 and prior years for the United States as a whole and for the three principal districts to which railroads are assigned for statistical purposes. These groupings are identified as the Eastern District, the Southern District and the Western District.
Many of the figures for 1977 are taken from quarterly reports of the Interstate Commerce Commission and should be considered as preliminary since compilation of the 1977 annual reports (R-1) had not been completed at the time this edition went to press.
