Many of the stories are written by authors who were part of the experience they describe, part of a "better time" in which elegance, romance, and danger were the elements of a balanced diet of life. Come with us now on a paddlewheeler, "From Philly to Fall River," or ride a wild steam bike on a tragic race; listen one last time to a band playing "Nearer My God to Thee" on the deck of the sinking Titanic; or relax once more on your porch and hear the haunting whistle of Big Gene's Ghost Train echoing across fields and meadows on a summer night.
Automobiles, locomotives, paddlewheelers, fire engines, even bicycles and submarines, were powered by steam engines. Those big, hulking, cumbersome steam engines with exposed valves, boilers, and fireboxes lent a special grace to anything they powered.
With a clank, whistle, and hiss, steam helped Cyrus Field link two continents with a transatlantic cable, rode with Fred Marriott to set a world's speed record, lugged tons of logs in Maine over hundreds of snowbound miles.
Steam killed and steam saved lives. Nobody could blame the weather for the notorious Larchmont disaster. If a steam chest blew as it did on the Atlantic, a ship was at the mercy of the seas. On land, steam created "supernatural" speeds and frightening demands were made on our ability to anticipate, to concentrate. Now, "asleep at the switch" meant sudden death.
New Englanders gloried in all of it, designing and building some of the finest ships, locomotives, and automobiles in the world. Contrary to myth, the Mississippi paddlewheelers were sorry imitations of our Long Island Sound steamers. These Yankee vessels "rivalled the ocean liners of the 19th century in bulk and magnificence." How Yankee sternness could produce such luxury and style will baffle historians for centuries to come.
But Yankees can do anything, and it's this unique ability to invent and adapt to any situation that provides a theme for YANKEES UNDER STEAM . . . not some contrived theme we dreamed up to hold a book together, but one that evolved from the process of collecting steam stories for a period of 35 years.
The Yankee silhouette was always there, this book just etches it a little deeper on a truly strategic period of American History.
