INTRODUCTION
In this Fifth Edition of the Stockbook the locomotives, carriages and other rail-mounted vehicles on the Worth Valley Railway as at the beginning of 1976 are fully described. The petrol trolleys and non-rail-mounted vehicles belonging to the Railway are not included. Efforts have been made to present a reasonably complete coverage of the recent history of items in the collection where this is appropriate.
Comparison with the previous Edition will reveal a rationalisation of the collection, at least partly by choice, whereby the number of items on the line has actually diminished. Whilst this inevitable process of change has robbed the collection of some of its gems, the remaining stock forms a more manageable whole which still includes the most varied locomotive collection in Britain.
The operation of Worth Valley trains has followed a well-established pattern for some time. The largest engines, such as the Class "5" 4-6-0 and Class "8F" 2-8-0's normally appear at peak summer weekends only, being ably assisted by traditional branch passenger power such as the Class "2" 2-6-2T, the 0-6-OPT and the "Austerity" 0-6-0ST's - which also handle most of the summer midweek services. Smaller engines such as the Manchester Ship Canal 0-6-OT's are normally used only on Sundays during the winter. An annual "Enthusiasts' Weekend" has been inaugurated to allow the more unusual and historic engines to show their paces.
Work has been continued to provide still more covered accommodation at Oxen-hope, to the point where all the engines in the collection could now be put under cover. Yet the Society does also recognise the claim of some of the more venerable carriage stock to protection from the elements. Further progress on the maintenance and restoration of the items in this book can only be made through the continued support of the Members of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society. The greatest token of appreciation of our efforts which any visitor can make is to become a Member of our Society; not only does this bring a valuable source of income but also, we hope, a sincere interest and even a possibility of active assistance with the furtherance of our aims.
