Over the past few years the various transport publishing houses have found it expedient to produce a great variety of photographic albums to cover all forms of transport in their changing roles. The steam locomotive has been singled out for rather special attention and its eclipse on the railways of Britain ought by now to have been adequately illustrated.
This is a photographic album with a difference. It covers not a holocaust but a resurrection, the re-birth of five miles of standard-gauge railway in the West Riding of Yorkshire. At the date of publication it is ten years since the last passenger trains ran over that line for British Railways. The three years which followed the last train were barren ones indeed, where talk and consultation were the greatest rays of hope.
The seven years since, starting with the arrival of the first engines on the line, have shown the Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society's progressive success in overcoming hurdles which often would have seemed insuperable.
The photographs in this book have almost all been taken by dedicated supporters of the Worth Valley Railway, many of whom are now more at home with a locomotive spanner than with a camera. There are two aspects, one a geographical coverage of the Worth Valley line from north to south, the second covering the Worth Valley engines from small to large. Following the pictures is a description of the locomotives of the Worth Valley Railway.
The book, like the Keighley 8- Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society which has published it, is a team effort and the photographs have therefore not been individually credited.
