Published in 1894, "The World's Rail Way" is a collector's item, and definitely in the "They-don't-make'em-like-this-anymore" category. Major Pangborn, an officer of the B&O in her heyday, was responsible for the impressive railway exhibit shown at the Columbian Exhibition of 1893 in Chicago.
To the scale models, drawings and relics he gathered together for the Exhibition he added the fervor of a railroad buff and the expertise of a railroad executive. The result is a volume that does for the locomotive what Boswell did for Johnson.
This is a lively narrative told in the present tense, filled with anecdotes and little-known details, bringing into focus the tensions, the frustrations, the disasters, the boundless confidence and faith that colored the lives of the railroad pioneers.
One can almost hear the piercing hiss of steam, the screech of metal on metal, the curses of the would-be engineers and finally the howls of triumph signaling the birth of the glory days of railroading.
Pangborn brings these men to life. So, in his oddly compelling style, does he bring the engines themselves to life, giving piston rods, walking beams and crank pins their rightful places in the nerve-wracking drama of steam travel.
Over 250 illustrations point up the practical, the curious and often the grotesque in locomotives and cars during the crucial hundred years between 1765 and 1893. Fifty of the illustrations are delicate fine-line engravings of "permanent way" tracks, surprisingly beautiful in their subtle differences.
