If asked what makes a great railway journey, some will say the distance, some the countryside, some the scenery, others will delight in the locomotive that pulls the train, while for others it is the people they meet on the way. All these factors and more have a part to play in the journeys described in this book, which range from the 16 km (10 mile) journey from
Leicester to Loughborough that set Thomas Cook on his career, to the journey of the Red Arrow, which travels half-way around the world from Brussels to Hong Kong.
Some of these journeys have been made recently, others are historical accounts of routes that are no longer possible. While it is accepted that the character of a railway journey will change over time, the historical accounts included here are unique snapshots of a railway's life, taken at the height of its popularity or success.
Divided into two sections - Great Journeys of the West, and Great Journeys of the East - the journeys are arranged geographically, from North America to the South Pacific, covering vast stretches of terrain, immense cultural differences and irreconcilable political extremes. What binds them together is the spirit of the railway, a pioneering adventurousness that exists as much now as when those first tracks were laid down all over the world.
