INTRODUCTION
In common with scores of other authors and researchers over the years I had become increasingly irritated by the lack of easily located information concerning the world's ocean-going merchant fleet as it existed at about the time of the start of the Second World War. Company histories in print abound and with some delving it is often not too difficult a task to obtain information concerning a large number of vessels of this era, but by no means all of them.
Encouraged by others I embarked on this task to endeavour to rectify many of the shortcomings which have appeared in print postwar and present the results of my research in a familiar style.
The contents of this book are, under national and company headings, listings of oceangoing fleets as they existed at the end of 1939.
A large part of the book is devoted to vessels lost during the Second World War by both war causes and marine hazard. This part also includes listings of ocean-going vessels scuttled for war purposes (usually as blockships), vessels sunk as breakwaters in the Mulberry harbours following D-Day, vessels lost postwar through striking mines, and the many vessels which were sunk postwar laden with surplus war materials, including poison gas ammunition.
Further sections also list vessels which changed name, flag, role or otherwise disposed of during the war years.
