Many of the world's older railways are now over 150 years old, and it is remarkable how much of the original routes and structures survive. For the most part, however, the present-day railroads bear little resemblance to the pioneer lines, apart from following the same routes and exploiting the concept of flanged wheels rolling on smooth metal rails.
This book demonstrates in text and pictures the great changes that have taken place. Sometimes regarded as conservative and old-fashioned, the railroads over the last half-century or more have undergone a technical transformation, equaling that of highway transport. The modern railway locomotive, which this book studies in several chapters, looks very different to its predecessors, and to a lesser extent the same is true of passenger and freight services, not to speak of such essentials as railway signaling and communications.
Beginning with the first steam trains, World Railways documents the rise of rail from a promising invention to a universal feature of daily life. It shows the years of expansion and perfection leading up to World War I, which lead to a period of unprecedented speed, convenience, and luxury, as well as the post war years when competition arrived from other forms of transport. More recently it goes on to look at the sleek high-speed trains that have revolutionized the railways and which promise to keep rail transport on the agenda for the future.
Packed with great photography past and present this book is an excellent guide to the history of rail around the world.
