Preface
Urban passenger railways - variously known as metros, undergrounds, subways and rapid transit systems - represent one of the main growth areas of the railway business throughout the world. To combat road traffic congestion, new metro systems are being built and old systems are being extended on a massive scale, and the number of passenger journeys made annually on metro systems worldwide is now of the astronomical order of 20,000 million.
The purpose of this book is to provide a conspectus of this huge industry, covering its history, planning, development, engineering, equipment and operation, and giving facts and figures about metro networks in cities on every continent. The book is intended as a work of reference for all involved or interested in metros, and in particular as a guide for the many authorities who are contemplating building metro lines in their own cities.
I am grateful to a number of people for their assistance and advice in the compilation of this book. In particular, I would like to thank Mr Bernard Bubbers and Mr Graeme Bruce for reading and commenting on the book in draft.
