This book is compulsory reading for all railway enthusiasts. It describes over 50 years of railway life and gives readers a professional and sometimes confidential view behind the scenes.
The title chosen for the book is admirable as it takes the reader through the constantly changing times of the former Southern Railway from pre-Nationalisation to the present day. At a time when privatization is being seriously considered, this book could become an account of station life throughout the whole of public ownership!
Tony Carter describes his career from the lowly beginnings of a Junior Clerk to his appointments as Station Master, Instructor and Senior Clerical Officer. He recalls in great detail the many steam locomotives that he has seen and worked with, and has many
amusing stories to relate, particularly during the time when the railway was a common carrier.
Railwaymen and enthusiasts alike will appreciate his description of early signalling and operating methods, and will be fascinated by the views behind the scenes at London Bridge, one of the country's busiest stations.
During my 43 years on the railway I have experienced many of the situations described in this book. It has brought back many happy memories.
