INTRODUCTION
When the thought of a book on the railroads of Wisconsin first came, there were all kinds of reasons not to do it. Hadn't Malcolm Rosholt just finished doing one? And what about all those books and articles that had been written about the railroads that run through our fine state? And finally given the above, how could anyone begin to assemble enough unpublished photos to fill a book of this size?
Fortunately there have been a good many photographers recording the history of Wisconsin railroads, including some right in our own backyard, the Wisconsin Chapter NRHS. They were there to photograph the passing of the Hiawathas and the 400's, the last runs of steam, and the general retrenchment of railroad operations in the State of Wisconsin. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the photographs contained herein will give the reader an encyclopedia worth of railroading in the Badger state.
We will begin our travels through time in the heyday of the train. After this brief taste, we will move geographically through the state (and Michigan's U.P..). Our time frame will cover - the 1930's, the Depression and the coming of the streamliners, the 1940's, with unprecedented wartime traffic levels, followed by a postwar enthusiasm, which gave Wisconsin rails hope for a bright future, and finally the 1950's, when the bubble burst, and steam and passenger trains vanished.
Those were heady days. One could still travel just about anywhere in the state of Wisconsin by train. A trip to the depot would be rewarded by a friendly chat with the depot agent, as well as a lineup of the many trains to come. And the equipment varied from gas electrics to the fastest streamliners in the land; from tired ten wheelers to the newest Geeps! This will be the focus of our book.
Lest we forget, remember that today's action is tomorrow's history. What is here today, may be gone tomorrow. This has been so painfully evident in recent years. So take those pictures. And don't forget the black and whites. Since they haven't figured out a way to make full color lithography as cheap as one color, we will continue to depend on black and white photos for publication purposes in the near and distant future.
