Railroads have been around for more than 150 years. Santa Fe Railway itself has been serving the public for over a century. It's logical, then, that many people think of railroading as an "old" industry. What's not true, however, is the idea that railroads are an antiquated form of transportation that is no longer very useful. That's not true in America nor any place else in the world.
It's easy to understand why people think that way today. For more than a century railroads provided the bulk of inter-city passenger transportation, and nearly everyone rode on a train, took someone to the station to catch a train, or met someone arriving. Modern superhighways built at taxpayers expense, and subsidized air transportation changed all that. Although Amtrak works hard at providing rail passenger service today, most people seldom come into direct contact with railroads, unless they have to wait at a grade crossing while a freight train passes.
