The adventure of the railway and the romance of gold come together in Roy Minter's epic story of the White Pass. When Klondike gold was discovered in 1896, tens of thousands of men rushed north. Behind them came entrepreneurs from Canada, the USA, and England, each with his own plan to transport the gold-seekers through Alaska's precipitous coastal mountains to the Yukon.
Minter describes how pack trails vied with tramlines, wagon roads with railway schemes, the town of Dyea with the town of Skagway. We meet the irrepressible Captain Moore, who discovered the White Pass in 1887, and the dastardly Soapy Smith, Skagway's frontier sharpie, who ruled the town's burgeoning underworld. We also meet the master of finance, Samuel Graves, and the three 'H's who built the railway - Michael J. Heney, Erastus Hawkins, and John Hislop. In May 1898, construction began in Skagway on the White Pass Railway -one of the toughest railway engineering jobs ever undertaken in the continent.
The White Pass is the definitive history of this extraordinary enterprise, from the discovery of the White Pass to the driving of the last spike in Carcross in 1900.
