Many oldtimers tell tales of an America that is rapidly vanishing, of the days of homesteading and frontier life. Sam Cassel, a saloonkeeper who would sometimes serve his customers sitting atop his pony, Pistol, remembers Stanley Dempski, a New York gangster: "He'd come downstairs and steal everyone's money off the bar. He was a kleptomaniac. Honest! But he was awfully clean. If anyone sat in his chair, he'd wipe it off afterwards." Monte Holm, who left home at thirteen to ride the railroads, recalls: "In the hobo jungles you could take something to eat but you always left the pans, such as they were, clean, so the next hobo that came along could use them." Also included are almost fifty photographs, many from personal collections or historical archives.
