The legendary heroes of the woods come alive in this collection of stories from the golden age of logging on the West Coast. Meet Harry Todd, who could run a steam donkey and roll a cigarette at the same time; Eight-Day Wilson, the coast's most famous short staker; Daddy Lamb, the woodsman/ farmer who made two blades of grass grow where none had grown before; Saul Reamy, whose line horse had caulks in its shoes and chewed tobacco; Broomhandle Charlie Snowden, the guy you called when you had a locie that couldn't drag a hat out of a lard bucket; and a host of others. These were the hookers, fallers, bull cooks, locomotive engineers and the rest of the working stiffs who rose above their everyday callings to become the subjects of interminable bunkhouse bull sessions and barroom storytelling. Robert Swanson wrote down their stories-not as literal history but as myth, for these men were and still are larger than life. "Without Homer," says Swanson, "the Greeks would amount to bugger all."
