PREFACE
Around the turn of the century Pocahontas County and surrounding areas became a mecca for those seeking to reap the stands of virgin timber. The hardwoods of oak, hickory, maple and birch grew on the slopes and valleys while the pines and spruce crowned the Appalachians. The saw soon changed the scenic beauty of these towering sentinels to stubble and waste, leaving scars that would take years to heal. An influx of foreigners changed the tranquil life of the sturdy locals to a bustling storm of activity.
Railroads radiating from the main hub into the hollows brought logs to the swollen streams that carried them to the mill where powerful saws ripped them into aromatic slivers to be shipped to the eastern markets. The rugged terrain tested the metal of these iron beasts; it also tested the meddle of those engaged in reaping the towering giants.
The crews were a motley bunch: rugged, independent, but for the most part industrious and friendly.
Today, remains of this glorious era can still be seen. Old railroad grades can be traced through the hollows where iron spikes and other remnants of a railroad, long past, can be found. Generations of this era still remain to carry on the modes and traditions of their ancestors.
Where Virgins Abound is of this era. Fact or fiction, true or make-believe-only the mind needs to make a distinction. Some will question my intent, others will find it entertaining. Whether or not you agree with my storytelling technique, I hope it will provide you with a measure of enjoyment and you will leave any controversy to the ages.
