LBC (long before children), my husband and I enjoyed years of vacation travel via plane, car, and foot. Then, in 1992, something happened to change all that: A train enthusiast was born to our family. By the time our son was two years old, it was clear that he considered trains to be the center of the universe. To really share in his nearly contagious enthusiasm, we reasoned, we needed to learn a lot more about trains. It dawned on us--what better way to expand our knowledge than to visit sites that feature trains?
Where the Trains Are! is the result of our pilgrimages. This book is designed especially for young train enthusiasts and those who love them-their parents, grandparents, and other caregivers who plan train-focused itineraries for vacations and short stays. The research for this book involved conducting field visits to many train attractions, but the bulk of information was retrieved from the sites themselves. To qualify as a train attraction for the book, the sites had to be open to the public, appropriate for children, and located within the United States and Canada. Entries range from scenic train rides, museums, model railroad exhibits, and static displays, to train hotels and restaurants with train-theme ambiance.
