PREFACE
THIS HISTORY OF MICHIGAN RAILROADS during the period that they dominated transportation in the state is the sixth pamphlet devoted to a special phase of Michigan's history which the Michigan Historical Commission, through the john M. Munson Michigan History Fund, has published since 1960. Dr. Frank N. Elliott, acting dean at the State University of New York, College at Cortland, was a logical person to be chosen as the author of this pamphlet since his doctoral dissertation at the University of Wisconsin had dealt with railroad history in that state, and he had begun the study of railroads in Wisconsin's neighboring state while serving as curator of history at the Michigan State University Museum.
Dr. Elliott's article, with its accompanying illustrations, presents the story of this important aspect of the state's history in a scholarly, yet entertaining and readable fashion and thereby fulfills the objectives that the late Dr. John M. Munson, former president of Eastern Michigan University, had in mind when he provided for the fund that bears his name-that is, to make available more literature on Michigan's history that would stimulate the interest of the state's citizens, and especially its young people, in learning about their heritage. This has likewise always been the goal of the Michigan Historical Commission in its publication program.
The Munson Fund pamphlets supplement the one-volume history, Michigan in Four Centuries, by Dr. F. Clever Bald, as do the other monographs, filmstrips, guides for teachers of Michigan history, picture kits, and other materials which the Commission, through the Munson Fund, has produced since the fund was established in 1950. Additional publications are planned which the Commission hopes will prove equally useful.
