About the Author
After photographing the construction of Beardsley Dam in 1955, Gerald French returned to shoot the finished project in 1958 for the Stockton Record newspaper.
Just as he got his camera set up, there suddenly appeared a belching steam engine pulling eleven log cars across the dam. From that moment on, French knew he was forever hooked on photographing all aspects of this logging railroad.
He continued shooting at the railroads nearby Beardsley Camp when he encountered George Colt the superintendent of the bridge crew. Colt warned that the camp was "off limits" to railroad photographers. Pleading for permission to continue his picture taking, French received his firm instructions from Colt, "Show up at Pickering's Hiring Hall in Standard on Wednesday at 8 a.m., I'll hire you on as a bridge carpenter!"
French arrived at the hall amid a huge crowd of lumber jacks looking for work. True to his word, Colt called out, "French!" The photographer reminisces, "If the looks from the lumber jacks could kill, I'd have been six feet under."
Thanks to Colt, French became a member of Pickering's bridge crew documenting the logging railroad through the lens of his 4x5 Speed Graphic during the summer of 1958.
Gerald French worked as a professional photographer in San Francisco and now lives in Texas. His many photographs have appeared in numerous international publications including National Geographic guidebooks, Time, Life, and Newsweek. Other titles include, Sights and Scenes of San Francisco and Sonoma.
