The Western New York and Pennsylvania, for most of its existence, was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and western New York and northwest Pennsylvania were never among the top priorities of the PRR. Thus, it comes as no surprise that most of what has been written about the PRR has treated western New York and northwest Pennsylvania lightly, if at all. With the publication of this book, we shall attempt to present the untold story by discussing the history of the principal elements of the WNY&P: Buffalo-Emporium; Buffalo-Oil City; the Rochester Branch; and related topics such as narrow-gauge railroads.
The authors, all residents of Hamburg, New York, have long been interested in history in general, and in railroad history in particular. Paul Pietrak is the author of four railroad books published and re-published for more than thirty years: Buffalo and Susquehanna (1966); Pittsburg, Shawmut and Northern (1969); Coudersport and Port Allegany/New York and Pennsylvania (1972); and Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh (1979). Jim Van Brocklin has been studying and photographing railroads for more than fifty years, sharing his knowledge with many audiences in New York and Pennsylvania. Joe Streamer, in retirement from Bethlehem Steel, has served as a municipal historian, and has written brief articles on railroad history for several publications.
A note regarding spelling: Allegany, Alleghany, and Allegheny are all correct, as are Pittsburg and Pittsburgh. We also see Larabee's, Larabees, and Larabee, and Swain's, Swains, and Swain. We have tried to use the spelling found in original documents for the most part, since different spellings have been used by different people at different times, and all these versions were considered acceptable at those times.
