The astute reader will notice that the type used in this book for the title, chapter headings, subheadings, page numbers and in many other places is not a normal printer's typeface. It was designed exclusively for this book by John D.L. Johnson based upon the Western Maryland's "Speed Style" lettering arid numbering painted on the locomotives. Great care was given to accurately reproduce this style and add into the alphabet those letters not used in the railroad's name.
