There is world-wide interest in the equipment and the operations of the Western Maryland (WM) Railway. To address that interest, this book covers the topic of diesel equipment and operations on the WM. It spans the time period from the first delivered units, in 1941, through the integration of the WM into the Chessie System via the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad in 1972 and later into CSX Transportation (CSXT), to the retirement of the last unit in WM paint in 1992. Western Maryland diesels, both original and look-alike units, can still be seen on the rails today. This book traces currently operational and display equipment in Western Maryland colors to the present time.
The Western Maryland Railway has captured the imaginations of generations of railfans, and has a world-wide loyal following. The railway is well defined geographically and temporally. It operated in West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. WM began experimenting with diesels during World War II, and rapidly dieselized after the war. WM maintenance of its equipment was legendary. Units were painted, washed, and waxed frequently. Even today, many WM structures still proudly display the corporate name, and rolling stock in WM lettering is still spotted on the rails. The railroad was created in 1852, and ceased to exist on April 14, 1983. However, even after being absorbed into the Chessie System, recognizable WM diesels roamed the rails until 1992. Today, ex-WM diesels in CSXT paint still work the yards and the mains.
The Western Maryland steam story has been told elsewhere. This book covers the period from about 1941, through the merger into the Chessie System, into the CSXT era. It discusses the transition of the railroad from steam to diesel, through the early operations of both types of motive power in mixed train consists, to complete dieselization by 1954.
The equipment chapter is organized by manufacturer, and then by type. Chapter 4 presents some information on the servicing shops that kept the diesels running. Chapter 5 talks about the route of the Western Maryland, with regard to which units frequented which sections. It helps those not familiar with the locations to find them on the map. Chapter 6 tells you where to see WM diesels today. Some are static displays, some are look-alikes, and some still venture out on the rails. Next is a bibliography of books and articles on the WM, and on the diesels they operated. Following that is a contact list for organizations. In appendices will be found the WM diesel rosters and a series of painting and lettering diagrams for the equipment.
