Geographical Setting
Our journey begins close to the River Severn in the ancient City of Worcester and will soon pass over a notable tributary, the River Teme. A steady climb ensues for three miles over mainly Marl before reaching the foot of the Malvern Hills. This impressive outcrop of ancient hard rocks is an outlier of the Welsh mountains. This necessitates a continuation of the climb for a further four miles before the ridge is penetrated in Colwall Tunnel.
A steady descent to the Leadon Valley, one mile west of Ledbury, takes the line onto fairly level Old Red Sandstone for the journey to the long established City of Hereford, an important market centre. Hop gardens and orchards are numerous.
The route to Leominster follows the Teme Valley for about four miles and then climbs steeply to Bromyard. Gradients of up to 1 in 44 are encountered before reaching the summit at Fencote. A long descent follows into the valley of the River Lugg at Leominster, usually pronounced Lemster. (Most places ending with "wick", on these lines, have a silent W.)
The Ledbury branch to Gloucester runs down the Leadon Valley to Dymock after which it climbs over a ridge to rejoin the river on its way towards the Severn, just west of Gloucester. This is the third county town to be featured in this album.
