GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING
From Newbury to Hungerford the route climbs steadily up the Kennet Valley near to the Kennet & Avon Canal, which it remains close to, almost as far as Pewsey. The climb across a chalk subsoil continues from Hungerford to the summit at Savernake, from where a northward branch climbed close to Savernake Forest to reach the old market town of Marlborough.
The long descent to Westbury is through the Vale of Pewsey, mainly over Upper Greensand and Gault Clay. There are fine views of the Chalk
escarpment of Salisbury Plain, which runs roughly parallel to the south side of the route for about 20 miles. The route crosses from Berkshire to Wiltshire between Hungerford and Bedwyn.
The Marlborough Branch began at Savernake on a small outcrop of Lower Greensand, but was predominantly on Chalk, much of it on the 500ft contour.
