West Virginia is greatly in need of a complete and authoritative history.
The present volume is not such a work. It is largely a compilation. It has gone to original sources but little. It has not preserved the balance nor the literary style of a proper history. It is the author's hope, however, that in the absence of a more thorough and technical work the present may prove a contribution of value. Old landmarks and old sources of information about the State are rapidly disappearing. New social conditions and new institutions are speedily taking the place of the old. Only a present day history can reflect the effects of these changes. A new statement of our case is, therefore, in order.
