West Side, as a book has been simmering on the back burner of my mind for over two decades now. With its transcontinental aspirations, its unusual equipment, the narrowness of its tracks and long productive life, the West Side has a character all its own. West Side was unique among Western narrow gauges.
Sure, it has been over nineteen years since the last logging train rumbled over River Bridge and down into Tuolumne, California back in the autumn of 1960. But, with each passing year there has been an increase in interest in the West Side. Lasting as long as it did, a number of fine photographers were able to record its comings and goings, while I am continually astounded at the number of fine old views that are found each year in dusty steamer trunks and old albums. These fine, if often faded views have provided an almost endless supply of photographs that show how things were in the Sierra high country. Modelers, on the other hand, have produced so many of the West Side's locomotives and cars in various scales that one wonders if the interest and enthusiasm has no end.
For my own part, many enjoyable evenings were spent in Tuolumne's Kimball Hotel, listening to the sounds of small Heislers and Shays in the night. After the classic old Kimball burned and the railroad ceased to run, the historic Sonora Inn provided suitable accomodations on frequent research trips into the Mother Lode. It was on these forays that many of the historic photographs were located, the old newspaper files read and former employees interviewed. Heck, who had time for such academic endeavors back when Shays were still smoking up the sky on their way down from Camp 45?
West Side has been an enjoyable love affair with the most interesting and intriguing piece of twisting narrow gauge trackage in the Sierras. I think I hear the mill whistle calling ... must be time to go to work! Here comes West Side.
