For over 100 years, the Canadian Pacific Railway has been a fundamental part of the story of western Canada and at the same time one of the most fascinating railways in the world. Since its construction in the 1880s, the greatest challenge for the CPR always has been the mountains of British Columbia-the Rockies, Selkirks, Monashees and the Cascade and Coast ranges. A century later they still present enormous barriers to rail transportation.
West of the Great Divide is the story of the CPR in British Columbia from the summit of the Rockies in the east to the rainforests of Vancouver Island in the west. In between are mountains and canyons like those of few other places on earth. Here is a detailed, sensitive account of construction, day-to-day operations, engineering achievements such as the Spiral and Connaught tunnels, battles with endless winter snows and mountain grades, the Kettle Valley Railway, Kootenay branch lines and the route through Crowsnest Pass, the Esquimalt & Nanaimo, locomotives and equipment, steam era passenger services, dieselization and the first generation of diesel power, The Canadian, modern unit trains, and the grade revisions of the 1980s.
The steam era of the 1920s to 1950s receives particular attention and photographic coverage with a spectacular selection of choice illustrations from many accomplished photographers. The story ranges from the luxurious Trans-Canada Limited and triple headed trains in the mountains to mixed trains and branch line wayfreights.
Also featured is the story of the Great Northern's branch lines across B.C.'s southern border with Washington, Idaho and Montana. Mining boom towns, narrow gauge mountain lines, and steamboats add colour and interest. This fascinating story is woven together with a background of the vast and beautiful landscape of British Columbia bringing the history of the railway and its impact on the province to life.
