DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Big trains in big country and big cities are shown in fine action photos. This is the story of today's railroading: today's Colorado & Southern with today's Fort Worth & Denver. These two important subsidiaries of the giant Burlington Northern Railroad are captured on film as they line up to move commodities from the high country of Wyoming, along the Front Range of the Rockies, and across the expanse of Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Fourteen thousand ton coal trains, priority freight traffic, and work-a-day locals ply polished rails through places like Horse Creek, Climax, Trinchere, and Dickworsham. A brief history of the two companies is provided to place the contemporary action scenes which follow into the context of time and geography. A nostalgic look back into earlier diesel eras features white F-units, the red and gray of the old Burlington Route, and the hodgepodge of just post merger BN paint schemes. Maps., power assignment information, and innovative arrangement complete this vivid picture of modern railroading at its best.
Noted rail artist Andrew Harmantas provided us with our cover painting. He has caught FW&D train 78 as it climbs the short but steep grade out of Wichita Falls, Texas and crosses into Clay County on its way to Ft. Worth. Andy lives in Lawton, Oklahoma from where he travels across the country to show his outstanding paintings.
