In a Pan-American airplane flying over the Gulf of Mexico en route from Mexico to Havana, Cuba, my mind has wandered to a recent visit in Mexico City with the author of this book, my dear friend Ed Hungerford, who was recently called to the great beyond before its publication. The writing of this story was his last and greatest love. It was Ed's request both personally and by cable that I should write the Foreword.
Little did I realize that this short expression of approval of his work and deep affection for my friend of thirty and seven years would be written high up in the Heavens in an airplane and thousands of miles from the lonely hospital room from which his spirit took its flight.
The writing of this history of the greatest pioneer company of our Republic was a joy and a fulfillment of a long-standing ambition of Ed Hungerford. He has done a fine job. The subject is too large and the history too long and romantic to be amply portrayed in any one volume, but those things herein recorded will, I hope, be sympathetically received by the reader. Ed Hungerford has devotedly tried to give us a true picture of one of America's most daring and romantic organizations, Wells, Fargo and Company, with its Pony Express, stage coaches, highway robberies, together with the experiences of those men who from the beginning, almost one hundred years ago, to the present day have so faithfully endeavored to render a valuable and useful service to this, our beloved country.
