DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Very infrequently a main line railway closes in Britain, the Great Central Railway perhaps features as one of the most notable that did. But in 1969 one of the main routes in Scotland and the North of England closed to passengers, leaving over 30,000 people without the facility of a railway. This main line was known as the `Waverley Route' and ran through the Border counties between Edinburgh Waverley Station and Carlisle.
The Waverley route was actually built in two stages from several small beginnings, the northern section from Edinburgh to Hawick opening in 1849 with the first through train from Carlisle to Edinburgh running in 1862 under the North British Railway Company.
The line soon became notorious for its tight curves and steep gradients, the most severe being one in 72 with others close to that figure. This caused problems for the railway's marketing as other more accessible routes became the preferred journey. However, these conditions provided some spectacular sights as passenger and freight trains struggled behind Pacific and other locomotive types to conquer the line.
This book conveys magnificently the ruggedness of the line through the lenses of some of Britain's most famous photographers, with names such as Eric Treacy featuring among them.
