On these pages we present a pictorial journey between New York and Buffalo on the Water Level Route, the designation by which the New York Central chose early in its history to identify itself. This representation was as often as not expressed as The SCENIC Water Level Route. It portrayed the Central's practically grade-less mainline so well that it weathered time and competition from other slogans and mottos. It was in essence if not literally the service mark of that road.
This is not intended to be a complete comprehensive history, neither in word nor in picture. It is rather a collection of photographs, of heralds, logos, slogans, notices and the like which appeared on equipment and on the printed page of timetables, brochures and other promotional material. These depict an era during much of which the New York Central was as it advertised itself "America's Greatest Railroad".
