DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
This is the story of the ships in which men have gone down to the sea to make war. Filled with pageantry, aflame with heroic deeds, alive with historical personages of monumental proportions, it sweeps down the ages from the Pharaonic fleets of 2900 B.C. to the "fighting ladies," the aircraft carriers of World War II.
Here is a story to delight the heart, the mind, and the imagination of every lover of military and naval lore, from sixteen to seventy. Lavishly illustrated, it vividly relates the history of the ships, and the tactics that have dominated battle on the waves.
Here are the war vessels of antiquity -the ships that cleaved Homer's "wine-dark sea" toward doomed Ilium, the triremes that saved the Greek world at Salamis, the quinqueremes that made the Mediterranean a Roman "lake." Here, too, are the longships of the Vikings and the incredible journeys they made. Here are the origins of the Britannia that was to rule the waves, and the galleys, galleasses, and galleons of the south.
Here are unforgettable pictures of the glories of the great Age of Sail, of Lord Nelson and his "line," John Paul Jones, and a host of other brilliant captains. Here are penetrating descriptions of the naval revolution of the nineteenth century effected by the screw propeller, the ironclad, and the horizon-arching big naval gun. Finally, here is the impressive, and ironic, story of the twentieth century's "ultimate" naval weapons : the Dreadnought, the battleship, the submarine, and the aircraft carrier.
To this magnificent panorama of ships and sea fights the author brings solid knowledge of seamanship and sure powers of evocation. The Warship in History is a volume as delightful to own as it is a pleasure to give.
