GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING
The River Lea, which flows into the Thames at Poplar, forms the boundary on the western side of Walthamstow and Leyton. The ancient Epping Forest is prominent on the eastern flanks of the area. Both local authorities were once administered by the county of Essex, but since 1965 they have formed the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
