Excerpt from book -
Yes, to many - myself included - the old station building is a nostalgic symbol of yesteryear, a typical branchline depot that never knew the thunder of the Southern Pacific's mightiest steam power. For in the heyday of passenger service, only little eight and ten-wheelers were allowed up the branch to pause regularly at Walnut Creek, trailing warped wooden coaches, sometimes with a few boxcars mixed in.
The Great Depression and the air-polluting auto killed forpassenger business on the 29-mile San Ramon branch which links the Tracy and Livermore main lines. Until the end of steam, the largest freight engines allowed on the branch were 2-8-0 Consolidations.
The station was built in 1891, according to the Walnut Creek Historical Society, and was opened for business in June of that year.
"That's close," said Larry Murphy, station agent from 1947 to '67. "An old telegrapher visited me about 1950. Showed me where he used to sleep in the baggage room. Said he worked there from 1896 to '99."
Johnny Fagundes, a retired S.P. engineer, 92 years old at this writing, recently visited the restaurant and announced he'd once slept, as a young firemen, in this very room.
