Model railroads are always built by people, so they should always be built for people
Designing your dream layout requires consideration of many factors. The maxim above expresses my belief that the most important factor is the human element. Inclusion of the people considerations illustrated by the plans in this book will pay big dividends in the future enjoyment of your layout.
The most important of these people considerations is access - so much so that the first three rules of layout design are all offshoots of access.
The first rule is for access during construction. This is so easy to achieve ( just move around the benchwork) that most model railroaders don't even consider it. Yet construction access is important. The best model railroads are created when the layout room is prepared before benchwork is started. Such projects as installing wiring for layout lighting, finishing the ceiling, installing valances and lighting fixtures, and painting the backdrop are more easily accomplished when access to these areas is unhindered.
Accessibility to every point on a layout was an advantage few model railroaders enjoyed in the old days. If a train stalled or derailed it always seemed to happen just beyond easy reach. But with the advent of control systems that allow the model engineer to walk around with his trains such problems no longer require access hatches and duckunders. A walkaround layout is all you need, and you'll find 16 of them in this book.
All these track plans were designed with the operator - and especially his needs - in mind. The author describes them in detail, from special construction requirements to basic and sophisticated operating features. He also examines options you can add and discusses which ones would be best for you.
