SIDE ONE
Track One The early morning of September 6, 1959, 2-10-4 #6315 and 4-8-4 #5632 were under a full head of steam in preparation for the most talked about Burlington passenger special of the year. Under sponsorship of the Illini Railroad Club, the nation's most active rail-travel group, a spectacular DOUBLEHEADER was operated from Clyde (Chicago) to Galesburg, Illinois. Re-live with us now, that glorious day when the 'iron horse' once again ruled the rails!
Just as the clear blue Windy City sky begins to glow with dawn, the giant Texas moves from the shadows of Clyde Roundhouse to the ready track, while the 5632 pants impatiently in the adjoining stall.
Track Two With the excitement of a circus coming to town, enormous crowds gather along the right-of-way to witness a page of history 'pass in review.' Our location is 1/2 mile west of La Grange Road at Stone Avenue. Approaching from the west is a hot-shot freight from Omaha and the dispatcher gives the diesel hoghead a yellow board until the doubleheader roars out of town . . . and roar she does!
Track Three Over the busy dispatcher's wire at Mendota Tower comes the anxiously awaited announcement, "Clear the extra 6315 and 5632 coupled west with no orders," and as the special halts momentarily. the towerman lines the switches for the west main. Then the coal burning 2-10-4 and the oil burning 4-8-4 march out of town, with the high iron all to themselves.
Track Four To never forget, here is a final last glimpse of Americana as the M4A and 05B high wheel their 18 heavy-weights through Kewanee, Illinois at better than 60 MPH.
Track Five Just sit back now and relax (we know you won't though)
as 5632's passenger whistle hauntingly echoes off of the mountain side at Armour, Missouri. Get set for a thrilling run as we pace alongside the powerful 4-8-4 at speeds up to 70 MPH. Note the unusual whistle effects as she rushes past factory buildings and storage elevators, northbound for St. Joseph.
Track Six Late in the afternoon of the same day, May 27th, 1961, our microphones were placed on top of the same "echo mountain" at Armour and we now present to you, a sound panorama of depth and distance as the 05B wheels southward, 3/4 of a mile away.
Track Seven Parksville, a small college town just north of Kansas
City and North Murray Yards, is the final scene of side one. The engine crew lives up to their promise faithfully as they put on a "really big show" for the local residents, and of course, our tape recorders.
SIDE TWO
Track One The westbound grade from Burlington, Iowa to New London, rising from the mighty Mississippi River at 1% along with numerous overheads, rows of factory buildings and warehouses sets the stage. The 5632 makes it appear an easy task as she lifts the ten car special of the Illini Club's fourth annual "Journey to Yesterday" over the hill from Burlington Station.
Our microphones have been placed on the tender to capture every conceivable sound of the O5B as she pounds up the grade with the whistle screaming like a banshee. This particular whistle was saved from a scrapped M4A by the Burlington shopmen. Thanks fellows! if you listen carefully, you will detect the high pitched whistle of the centrifugal water pump.
Track Two Colorado & Southern, an important link in the Burlington System operates #638, a hefty 2-8-0 on "Sunday Only" but due to very special consideration, we have captured the consolidation leaving Fort Collins, Colorado, southbound, with an Illini Club special on Friday, June 8th, 1962. Microphones were again placed on the tender resulting in the brilliant clarity of sound as the locomotive's every breath is heard.
Track Three A final trackside scene of the 638 as she races home to Denver, saluting Boulder, home of the University of Colorado.
Probably you are saying to yourself, "Say, haven't we forgotten something? Where's the 4960?" No we haven't forgotten the famous Mike and she will make her recording debut in the very near future, and rewardingly so.
ON THE BACK
In that vast expanse of America between the Great Lakes and Rocky Mountains, the Burlington is something very special. Its silvery Zephyrs, long strings of Vista Dome cars powered by throbbing EMD's, speed nightly to and from Chicago and Denver, gladdening the hearts of Midwesterners who usually take time to pause and watch them roar by.
The fierce loyalty of Burlington's Chicago commuters is a phenomenon that never fails to spur newspaper writers to prose; usually each time the road is forced to file for a ticket fare increase. In contrast to other Chicago commuter lines, who often find themselves the target of organized commuter wrath, Burlington's patrons seem to understand that adequate fares are necessary for stainless steel, air-conditioned cars and on-time performance, and never murmur a protest.
But it is in the field of steam excursions that Burlington has built a following of dyed-in-the-wool partisans who would cheerfully push under the nearest diesel anyone who said an unkind word about the road. And Q's most popular steam excursions have been those operated on Sundays.
Blessed with a president to whom the chime of a steam locomotive whistle is the sweetest sound on earth, Burlington has seen fit to keep two steamers in top operating form. Perhaps by now the two most famous locomotives of all time, oil-burning 5632 - a 4-8-4 husky built in 1940, and coal burning Mike 4960 - a surprisingly peppy throwback to 1923, have brought the sights and sounds of yesterday to countless thousands throughout the road's 11-state area.
Muscled by 67,500 pounds tractive effort and 250 pounds boiler pressure, 5632 hurtles fan specials over Q mainlines with a zip calculated to make a Zephyr envious. Oldster 4960, despite her vintage and comparatively smaller bulk and statistics, has hit speeds of 80 miles per hour on the mainline and has no trouble rolling 18 passenger cars over scenic Burlington branches that squeeze out the 5632.
So here, then, is a tribute to those famous Sunday excursions of the Everywhere West Line. We hope it rouses the ghosts of such departed trains as the ARISTOCRAT, ATLANTIC EXPRESS, AK-SAR-BEN and BLACKHAWK.
