At 10.45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time the three hand-fired steam locomotives pulled their train out of the Union Station in Toronto, Ontario, bound for Orangeville, fifty-five miles away. They passed Parkdale and stopped at West Toronto to board more passengers. Leaving the station the train passed West Toronto and Lambton yards (Main Freight yards), Islington (station now closed), Obico (small yard and junction with Canpa Subdivision), Queensway (secondary yard), and finally left Metropolitan Toronto behind. Further along this line (Galt Subdivision) is Dixie, Cooksville (Toronto Yard Limit), Erindale and Isville, 21 miles from the Union Station in Toronto and junction with the Orangeville Subdivision. Here the train received additional orders for the while the engines took on water.
