Insurgencies, usually in the form of guerrilla warfare, are a widespread and recurring form of political violence. While most of these uprisings ultimately fail, Victorious Insurgencies: Four Rebellions That Shaped Our World analyzes four conflicts in which the insurgents' success profoundly altered the contemporary global arena: the Maoists in China against both Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists and the Japanese in the 1930s and 1940s; the Viet Minh against the French in Indochina from 1945 to 1954; Castro's followers against Batista in Cuba from 1956 to 1959; and the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union from 1980 to 1989.
In his analyses of these rebel victories, Anthony James Joes demonstrates that although the insurgencies developed in different cultures and time periods, each case displays a similar pattern of political and military blunders by the counterinsurgent forcesmistakes that made victory possible for the insurgents. Joes also explains the critical influence of international political conditions on the outcome of such conflicts.
