Climb aboard this first-ever all-color tour of VIA Rail Canada, covering the system's first quarter-century from its beginnings as a Canadian National marketing subsidiary to its truly national role as the Crown corporation responsible for Canada's intercity passenger train network.
It's all here: Unveiling the VIA brand in 1976 with CN's sleek Turbo ... the diversity of equipment used on the busy Ontario-Quebec Corridor, from Rapidos to next-generation LRCs ... Budd Rail Diesel Cars ... the evolution of VIA's transcontinental operations, featuring the domeliner Canadian and Super Continental in the West and the Ocean and Atlantic between Montreal and Nova Scotia ... trains such as the Hudson Bay serving Canada's remote northern hinterland ... and a look at VIA's "lesser lights," trains that toiled on secondary routes in the shadow of better-known counterparts.
Emphasis is on VIM early years, when cars and locomotives inherited from Canadian National and Canadian Pacific were consolidated in a period of remarkably colorful operation. Coverage extends through the 1980s and 1990s, when VIA introduced its first new equipment in the form of lightweight LRC trainsets and F4OPH-2 diesel locomotives, setting the stage for the retirement of its former CN car fleet and the conversion of the Budd-built ex-CP survivors from steam heat to all-electric "head-end power" operation.
