HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This guide has four colour-coded sections for the four routes followed by the Canadian, Skeena, Hudson Bay and Molahat. Each section contains an introduction to the mute, overviews of the provinces or regions crossed, profiles of major cities and a guide to the sights along the way. Maps of the trains' mutes are placed in proximity to the accompanying text.
One of the railway traditions the milepost provides the key to locating a train's current position. Though Canada
now uses the metric system, the original markers for railroads were, and still are, in miles. Each line is subdivided at Railway Division Points; these subdivisions are not a standard length, they were based on the distance a steam locomotive could travel in a day. The miles are counted from '0' going east to west, or south to north.
Mileposts may be on either side of a train, and are usually rectangular white signs with black numbers. On signal posts, the decimal point before the last digit is not shown, and a reading of 132 would in fact mean 13.2.
Photographers inspired to record the journey on film, will be rewarded with many opportunities to capture the passing 'scenery. Since reflection from windows is a common problem, enthusiasts can compensate by keeping the camera lens close to the glass. Blur can be reduced by shooting at a 45-degree angle.
Each of the four Lutes in Enchanting Horizons is detailed from starting point to final destination, but the description of each mute is easy to follow in either direction of travel.
