coupled with foundries at Aberystwyth, which required transport to and from the mines. At that time Aberystwyth did not foresee a big future for tourists, although the railway was expected to help its development. Not surprisingly, due to the terrain the promoters decided on a 2-foot gauge railway (in fact built to lft 11iin), using the precedent of the Festiniog Railway. Following a Board of Trade enquiry held in Aberystwyth to resolve differences of opinion mainly regarding the harbour branch, the railway obtained its statutory powers in August 1897 by the Vale of Rheidol (Light) Railway Act 1897.
