INTRODUCTION
The origins of this railway were no less chequered in its gestation period than many other lines whose promoters' aspirations often ran ahead of reality or commercial prudence.
Visitors to the beautiful area of the Rheidol Valley would be surprised to learn that in the latter part of the 19th century the population was nearly four times that of today, due to much lead-mining activity and timber estates coupled with foundries at Aberystwyth, which required transport to and from the mines. At that time Aberystwyth did not foresee a big future for tourists, although the railway was expected to help its development. Not surprisingly, due to the terrain the promoters decided on a 2-foot gauge railway (in fact built to lft 11iin), using the precedent of the Festiniog Railway. Following a Board of Trade enquiry held in Aberystwyth to resolve differences of opinion mainly regarding the harbour branch, the railway obtained its statutory powers in August 1897 by the Vale of Rheidol (Light) Railway Act 1897. Even so, there was difficulty for the promoters in raising the capital, and various amendments to the statutory provisions were required.
