As there are ghost towns in Utah, so there are ghost railroads. A ghost town is a village bereft of its former population, for whatever reason, or at the most, containing a small fraction of its previous residents-and where essentially all its former activity has died out. A ghost railroad is one which has run the course of its existence. When the purpose for which a rail line was built comes to an end, there is generally no further reason to keep the rails intact, as the cost of keeping tracks on the ground, let alone maintaining them, is enormous these days. And, of course, the value of the rails, signals, etc., have to be recovered by the railroad companies, and the taxable land an individual railroad owns becomes burdensome if it is not producing income.
Many of the railways discussed here were short lines to various mines or settlements. Several were incorporated as branches into larger railroads, and while the main trunk line still exists and operates daily trains, some of the branches have had to be lopped off as no longer necessary.
This book makes no attempt to be all inclusive of every railroad constructed in the state, although, through mergers and takeovers, all the major railroads are mentioned along with most of the small lines. Also, not every abandoned stretch of track is listed, especially those in larger cities where rearrangement of trackage is necessary to accommodate customer's requirements. If we have failed to include your favorite abandoned line, we apologize.
The major attempt is to outline briefly the history of railways which are no longer in existence
