DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
This is, quite simply, the most complete compilation of data ever presented on U.S. and Allied submarine operations in the war against Japan. It provides for the first time a full chronological listing of all U.S. submarine attacks that claimed to have damaged or sunk their targets in World War II, including those few that occurred in the Atlantic, and all attacks by British and Dutch submarines in the Far Eastern theater. These officially reported attacks are then matched against information compiled from Japanese and other sources, with discrepancies indicated and possible explanations offered.
A monumental task that took years to complete, this unique presentation of statistics from both Allied and Axis sources fills significant gaps in the record. In many cases, the comparisons drawn here allow attacking submarines and their targets to be positively identified for the first time.
This book updates and greatly expands upon all previously published accounts, including the official U.S. report issued in 1947 by the Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee. With access to sources not available to that committee, the author corrects many long-standing errors and provides information on hundreds of previously ignored attackseven those on small craft and those that resulted in damage but not sinking.
The tables provided here list the date, time, and location of each attack with the name and patrol number of the submarine; the type and size of ship attacked; the weapons used; and, finally, the damage claimed. Comparative data from Japanese sources are then listed, including the date, location, type, name, and size of ship involved and the extent of the damage. Appendixes give information on submarine minelaying activities and list U.S., British, and Dutch submarines and their commanding officers. An extensive computer-generated index provides a convenient cross-reference between ship names and chronological data entries.
