This book is based on the Companies' annual reports, and Government statistics, all of which are available to the public.
It is designed to supplement the information given in the various publications, a list of which are given below. It is hoped that the book contains nothing which can be easily obtained from any of these other publications.
It presents the case as the public sees it, and does not pretend to give inside information. Reference has only been made to the Companies to clear up a few important points. In fact reference to Companies has been avoided as far as possible.
Thanks are due to the Secretaries of Companies for providing us with their reports and other information, and the Editor of the Statist for lending us certain American Reports which were out of print, and to the Editor of the Railway News for lending us certain reports which were out of print, and for allowing us to make use of some of the figures of some of the English Railway receipts published in that journal.
