The smells of good cooking have emanated from First United Methodist Church from the very first meeting of the congregation in 1872. In that year, Collis P. Huntington, looking for a terminus for his C&O Railroad, had laid out his "city" of Huntington in a cornfield along the banks of the Ohio. Soon, the town was a-building and workers were yearning for houses of worship. One of the first to be built was the Methodist Episcopal Church.
This church, which fills an impressive stone building today, had very humble beginnings. Thomas and Alonzo Palmer had come to Huntington to build a city and a future for themselves. Within a month of their arrival, they had a thriving carpenter's shop and had opened the doors of that shop for a union Sunday school meeting. Forty people (including at least four women) attended to organize a Methodist society, to sing, worship, and enjoy the pot of beans that the Palmers had simmering on the stove.
We have been singing, worshiping, and eating ever since. From the 1875 Brick Chapel, a "very neat and tasty" church home built on the southwest corner of Tenth Street and Fourth Avenue, to the impressive, steepled 1891 Church on the Corner that took its place, to our present Gray Stone Towers, dedicated in 1914. Although few women are recorded in early church records, this impressive record of growth could not have been accomplished without the help of the women.
